PRINCE2 Agile® Frequently Asked Questions

What is PRINCE2 Agile®?

PRINCE2 Agile® is the world’s most complete agile project management method, combining the benefits of agile ways of working with the governance and structure of the PRINCE2® project management method. At launch in 2015 it was an extension module tailored for organizations and individuals already benefiting from PRINCE2, providing further guidance on how to apply agile techniques, tools and frameworks to their projects.

It was initially supported by a PRINCE2 Agile manual and PRINCE2 Agile Practitioner level exam and formal certification. AXELOS has now announced the PRINCE2 Agile Foundation certificate for everyone who would benefit from guidance on delivering, managing or working within agile projects and project teams.

Why did AXELOS develop PRINCE2 Agile?

AXELOS continually monitors global community feedback on the need for and value of updates to the entire portfolio and seeks to respond to it accordingly. One of the earliest pieces of feedback that AXELOS received was the need to provide additional and detailed guidance on how practitioners could apply PRINCE2 in an agile context.

The update to PRINCE2 in 2009 ensured that the method was fully compatible with agile delivery approaches and was built upon in the 2017 update. That said, PRINCE2 does not explain in detail or provide additional guidance on how to tailor the method in an agile way. PRINCE2 Agile, provides this added level of detail on how to deliver agile projects.

Who is PRINCE2 Agile for?

PRINCE2 Agile has been developed for anyone who delivers projects, large or small, in an agile context. It is a valuable training and certification scheme for anyone working within an agile project environment, whether they be a project manager, project support or part of the wider project team.

PRINCE2 Agile equips practitioners and organizations with the ability to deliver agile projects by tailoring the PRINCE2 project management method with a broad toolset of agile delivery techniques and frameworks. In this way practitioners, will leverage the benefits of agile ways of working such as iterative and incremental delivery while maintaining a structure of project governance.

How does PRINCE2 Agile relate to PRINCE2 (and the wider PPM Portfolio)?

PRINCE2 Agile is compatible and aligned with the entire PPM portfolio. With the launch of the PRINCE2 Agile Foundation level, it is now a standalone agile project management method, supported by accredited training and certification scheme. For launch in mid-2018, PRINCE2 Agile is also aligned to the PRINCE2 2017 update.

PRINCE2 Agile should also be of interest for programme managers with the Managing Successful Programmes (MSP®) certification who will need to understand not only how the programme relates to projects, but also how projects relate to the delivery mechanism.

What certifications are available to support PRINCE2 Agile?

Initially AXELOS developed a Practitioner level certification which launched in mid-2015. This is supported by accredited training provided by AXELOS Accredited Training Organizations (ATOs) and comprises of a multiple-choice exam based on a scenario.

For further information on the Practitioner certificate, see the PRINCE2 Agile Certification page. AXELOS is also developing a PRINCE2 Agile Foundation level which will launch in mid-2018.

What is the prerequisite to take the PRINCE2 Agile Practitioner Exam?

As of 1 October 2016, a candidate can take the PRINCE2 Agile Practitioner exam if they hold any of the following:

  • PRINCE2 Agile Foundation (to be released in mid-2018).
  • PRINCE2 Foundation (or higher)
  • Project Management Professional® (PMP)*
  • Certified Associate in Project Management® (CAPM)*
  • IMPA Levels A, B, C and D® (Certified Projects Director).

*'PMP' and 'CAPM' are registered marks of Project Management Institute, Inc. PMI is not affiliated with AXELOS. PMI does not endorse any AXELOS Qualifications.

What is PRINCE2 Agile Foundation?

PRINCE2 Agile Foundation is a newly developed certification level to support PRINCE2 Agile. In 2015, PRINCE2 Agile initially launched with a Practitioner level certification and this new Foundation level will build upon that success by opening PRINCE2 Agile out to project managers outside of the existing PRINCE2 community.

The development of the new certification level will not impact the existing prerequisites for PRINCE2 Agile Practitioner. Please refer to the main PRINCE2 Agile FAQ document for the full list of prerequisite certifications for PRINCE2 Agile Practitioner.

Why has AXELOS developed a Foundation level for PRINCE2 Agile?

Since the launch of PRINCE2 Agile, AXELOS has been monitoring feedback from the community on this product.

In 2016 AXELOS took the decision to lower the prerequisite for PRINCE2 Agile Practitioner from the PRINCE2 Practitioner certificate to PRINCE2 Foundation.

The development and upcoming launch of the Foundation level is a continuation of that rationale, so that more professionals working in an agile project management environment can benefit from PRINCE2 Agile.

What is the format of PRINCE2 Agile Foundation?

The Foundation certificate can be achieved by completing a one-hour multiple-choice paper which includes 50 questions. The examination is closed book.

How do I register for a PRINCE2 Agile training course?

PRINCE2 Agile Practitioner training is currently available from ATOs. ATOs offer a complete range of learning options from in classroom to various self-study options. PRINCE2 Agile Foundation will also be delivered via the AXELOS network of training partners.

A complete list of PRINCE2 Agile ATOs can be found through a training provider search.

What are the delivery methods for PRINCE2 Agile accredited training courses?

PRINCE2 Agile training is available via ATOs or their approved partners in many formats, including face-to-face training in a physical or virtual classroom, or through distance learning which may be delivered via Learning Technologies or other methods. Some training solutions may be a combination of both.

Am I able to self-study for the PRINCE2 Agile examinations?

Candidates can self-study for the PRINCE2 Agile Practitioner certification (i.e. take the examinations directly from an Examination Institute without attending an accredited training course) although AXELOS would strongly recommend taking accredited training before taking the PRINCE2 Agile Practitioner exam. Contact AXELOS’ Examination Institute, PeopleCert, if you would like to take an exam after self-studying.

Candidates will also be able to self-study for PRINCE2 Agile Foundation.

Which publication should I use to study for the PRINCE2 Agile examinations?

The PRINCE2 Agile training and examination is based on the PRINCE2 Agile publication which can be purchased from the AXELOS Store.

While the publication can be used to study for the PRINCE2 Agile Foundation examination, it is not possible to take the guide into the examination itself. The Practitioner level is open book and so the guide can be used in support of this examination.

What languages is PRINCE2 Agile currently available in?

The PRINCE2 Agile manual is only available in English.

Further information about any planned translations will be released at a later date.

The PRINCE2 Agile Practitioner examination and glossary are also available in German and Polish.

Is there membership for PRINCE2 Agile?

Yes, currently PRINCE2 Agile membership is included within the PRINCE2 subscription.

Candidates who have obtained the PRINCE2 Agile Practitioner certificate may obtain their PRINCE2 Agile Practitioner digital badge through the programme, by obtaining 20 continuing professional development (CPD) points each year.

CPD points can be obtained through several professional development activities including active community engagement, relevant training or demonstrating professional experience. It is worth noting that 5 of the 20 CPD points must be obtained through professional experience.

Will there be a PRINCE2 Agile Foundation digital badge?

Yes, for launch in mid-2018 there will be a PRINCE2 Agile Foundation digital badge.

AXELOS will provide more details about this, and other updates to PRINCE2 Agile membership closer to launch.
